Within Spanish history lies the Golden Age ("Siglo de Oro"), one of the most brilliant cultural periods in Spain.
It was a time of extraordinary literary, artistic and political flourishing. This period began in 1492, the year of Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to America and the publication of the first Castilian Grammar by Antonio de Nebrija.
The Golden Age ended in 1681, the year of the death of playwright Pedro Calderón de la Barca, as explained by the Lope de Vega House Museum, another of the great authors of this era.
Spain’s Golden Age represented the greatest literary and artistic flourishing in Spanish history, beginning with the Renaissance and concluding with the Baroque period, two very distinct artistic movements that shaped Spanish culture and literature.
